An amazing home library made of 10,000 pieces of walnut (pictures)
This home library in Arizona was inspired by the 19th-century library at the Konopiště Castle, near Prague, Czech Republic.
The library was built by Jim Cardon, a Denver-based woodworker with over 30 years of experience. His portfolio includes, besides libraries, amazing examples of custom-built kitchens, cabinets, and reading nooks.
Jim was asked by his brother to design a room for books in Mesa, Arizona. The room is 17 by 27 feet, and its height is 12 feet.
· · · If there’s one decorating myth that I’d love to see go the way of the dodo bird, it’s the one that claims dark wall colors are unfit for small rooms. White walls often expand a space, but dark hues can work their own type of magic in small places, and more often than not the result is dead classy and much harder to get wrong.

An Expansive Greenwich Village Loft That’s Finally Ready for Its Closeup
Artist Kerry Scharlin turned to designers Laura Santos and Sandra Weingort to make magic in the 7,000-square-foot live-work space
In the office-cum-library, featuring custom millwork, the rug is Orley Shabahang and the sofa, from Room, is upholstered in Christopher Hyland mohair fabric with pillows from ALT for Living. The coffee table, purchased from Gueridon, is French with Sou-Chong tiles by Roger Capron from the 1970s. The pendant light is by Studio Van den Akker. The desk was purchased from Julian Chichester and finished with a custom blotter by Christina Z. Antonio. The desk chair is the “Time Life” model in vintage leather by Charles and Ray Eames, purchased at Wyeth. The photograph is by Andrew Bush.

DIY Diagonal Bookshelf
Making your own furniture brings a different level of satisfaction. Seeing the product of your effort and hardwork is really something else. Here’s another project that will surely bring a smile to your face: a diagonal bookshelf. Why go for the typical bookshelf when you can have something out of the ordinary? Its modern look gives the old boring bookshelf a total upgrade. Plus, it’s sure to draw the interest of whoever sees it – a perfect conversation piece. This diagonal bookshelf is both visually appealing and functional. A furniture piece like this is a must-have. You’re going to have

5 Amazing Game Room Decor Ideas For Families & Teens
When D’KOR HOME Interiors received the call to design a game room for two teenage girls madly in love with the popular Netflix show Stranger Things, our interior designer and decorators were in heaven. All of the 1970’s decor came to mind.
If you haven’t already, click here to view the before photos of this entire interior design game room project, behind the scenes of the Stranger Things favorite games room design process, and see all of the after photos too.
Now onto the 7 Amazing Game Room Decor Ideas, you came for…
With COVID-19 and staying at home being in place for so many, here are some of the biggest shifts in Texas home game room decor ideas for families with teens:
1. Create spaces that function for the whole family.
Ask each family member for a list of things they would like to see included in the game room decor. Taking everyone’s dreams, desires, and considerations helps design a room that functions for the entire family’s lifestyle.
Does the room need to duly function as a dining room, television room, or mini-home theatre? Or will the game room also serve as or be close to a guest bedroom. All of these were thoughts in the project shown. Click here to get ideas for a full game room home remodeling project. The game room design ideas below will give you a few ideas that I didn’t include in the original interior design ideas for home renovation post.
2. Include wooden board games as part of the game room decor ideas.
Encouraging children room ideas to play physical board games vs. Candy Crush could crush mental health issues. Using wooden games and old-fashioned board arcade games console as decor instead of hiding them away in the closet is a great solution for game room wall art decor and for your family’s ease in gathering and playing. No one has to get anything out of the closet! The games are already there in plain sight as part of the game room decor! How convenient?
Adding any kind of soft texture will help absorb those screams and shrills when someone wins or loses! Or maybe you don’t want to reduce those sweet shrills and screams! Just in case you do – adding custom window treatments, or a properly sized area rug with some designer pillows or comfy throws is your best friend.
4. Add decorative coasters & leave plenty of room to play, sit down a drink, or bowl of popcorn.
Provide beautiful decorative or marble coasters to prevent ring stains on tables or ottoman tops. Don’t over-accessorize cocktail tables and end tables
with unnecessary home decor. Don’t add too many pillows. Accessories are all about balance and functionality for you and your family.
I’m probably the only designer out there that will give you advice on function first. Yes, I love a beautiful room, but there’s a happy balance between design & function. Just like Design Therapy is always a good idea when you don’t agree with a family member or even your husband. Did you read my post about my Couples Design Therapy sessions? If not, click here to read about: His and her Interior Design Ideas.
5. Get comfortable! Buy furniture that pairs nicely together or consider custom furniture.
Often times, furniture in a living room or family room ideas is too spread out to play games. Or maybe it’s not the right shaped furniture. Or maybe the furniture is simply not comfortable for the family. Each family is different, and everyone has various needs. Most families prefer a large square or round ottoman they can prop their feet on for a movie. Then later, that same ottoman can dual as the game table or pool table. For my interior design firm’s retiree clients, this does not work so well.
For older adults, we often provide interior design solutions for a dining room table or kitchen table to dual as a game room or puzzle room. Click here to see transitional game room ideas. Either table has to be perfectly paired. Or sofas, chairs, and ottomans have to be paired for comfortability.
I think we’ve all set down in a restaurant, and whether the chair is too high or too low can make you immediately feel uncomfortable. Or maybe you’re the one that always gets to sit in the odd chair at the family dinners. You know that chair that either towers you over the others seated or leaves sitting so low you feel like you’re five again. Playing a game at a table or ottoman that is too high or too low is like trying to eat at a restaurant table that is not suited for the chairs.

Black & White Interiors Trends With Amazing Art Deco Silhouettes & Patterned Bone Inlay Focal Furniture
Bone Inlay Furniture Home Trend 2022 for Black & White Interiors
First comes…
What is bone inlay? How is bone inlay furniture made?
Bone inlay is also known as intarsia. Bone inlay is a home decor trend in which fragments of bone or shell are cut and placed in a pattern to adhere to the frame of a furniture piece. It is most commonly used on flat surfaces – such as the sides and tops of tables or the front of a sideboard.
Bone Inlay Furniture Ideas
It’s relatively uncommon to see bone inlay furniture patterns mixed in the Hooker Furniture console above, but we liked it for black & white interiors or to add to a home filled with color.
The Hooker kaleidoscope geometric prism console created with the bone inlaid technique was gorgeous.
Simplistic and uncomplicated, this black and white pattern bone inlay console would work with almost any home decor – modern or traditional.
Mixing the creamy-edged bone inlay naturally finished patterned hexagon table would be stunning with any black and white home decor. It also works well for our interior design projects when clients are leaning toward an art deco-style home.
Geometry mixed with black and white door fronts and stained organic wood make a great keepsake focal piece for entryways, bedrooms, family rooms, or kitchens.
A bone inlay chest is almost always in black & white paired with stained wood, making a statement in otherwise neutral spaces.
This fantastic Art Deco geometric fan pattern works nicely in traditional and modern decor. This three-drawer bone inlay chest would work beautifully as master nightstands, in a foyer, in a dining room, or it could even convert to a powder room sink cabinet.
Home Design Trend | Black & White Interiors
This black & white stripe Norwalk settee is terrific in both comfort and functionality. It pairs nicely with almost any color. Be inspired by our most colorful rooms or colorful home office designs.
Black & White Rugs
Making unique natural handmade rugs, Jaipur’s 400 weavers made this art deco pattern in Indian villages loom in their own homes or community loom area. Jaipur drops of looms for them, allowing them to continue to maintain their home life while working. They also opened bank accounts for direct deposits to get an education, healthcare, and access to doctors + nurses two times a year to provide care for the entire family.
Art Deco Furniture
An Art Deco style furniture is hot! A beautifully detailed octagon cocktail like this table can work well in place of a round table. The inlaid woods or bone inlay art deco patterns make a unique focal point, whereas a typical cocktail table is more subdued.
The traditional black & white Art Deco fan pattern is classic and looks fabulous!
Black & white walls with gold accents with this natural walnut striped veneer.
Bonus Art Deco Trend
Art Deco pattern rugs are an easy way to introduce a little art deco into any home interior.

Mix it up! Use interesting upholstery fabric & hydes.
Creating interesting upholstery is somewhat of a lost art. Or at least it was until High Point Market 2021. We saw unusual mixes of upholstery fabric placement, including leathers, hides, and textures. There were enough mixed materials in upholstery that we could make exciting upholstery 2022 blog post.
We hope you enjoy seeing everything from western-style upholstered furniture to more modern mixed upholstered furniture. Incase you missed these photos from our Instagram:
Very Interesting Upholstery Fabric Ideas from High Point Market Fall 2021
Mixed fabrics with natural materials like leather and sherpa were a huge hit with several major showrooms.
Western Style Upholstered Furniture with Leather & Sherpa
Being an interior designer in Dallas TX gives us plenty of opportunities to use western style home decor. Believe it or not, Texas ranchers need leather, sherpa, & hair on hyde furnishings to best suit their lifestyle and taste. I think many people believe cowboys just like the look, but often the use of leathers and brown tones is essential to prevent dirt from absorbing into their home furnishings. Think a car seat.
The Hooker Furniture’s solid brown leather mixed with the golden cow hair on hyde leather would look awesome floating with an exposed back.
Often white sofas can get a little dirty on the outsides if there are no tables on either side or unless the sofa is against a wall. The Hooker Furniture creamy leather on the outside mixed with the textured sherpa on the inside makes cleaning super easy.
Universal Furniture designers created a pattern using creamy leather and cream tweed for texture.
The contrasting ultra-suede in dark gray paired with the lighter-toned gray velvety chenille look great on this Stickley sectional. Chenille is always comfortable and easy to up, but so is the chenille.
Interesting Upholstery Fabric
Textured Bouclé Fabric is Hot! Hot! Hot!
What is Bouclé fabric?
Bouclé is yarn made into a fabric. The fabric is made from a length of loops of yarn of similar size, which ranges in size. To make bouclé fabric, at least two strands are combined with machine spinning. The tension on one strand is much looser than the other as it is being plied, with the loose strand forming the loops and the other strand as the anchor. Bouclé is also the name of the fabric made from this type of yarn, especially fabric that maintains the looped appearance.
This nobby new almost perfectly evenly peeled fabric trend is called Bouclé. With the Crypton Home Fabric performance fabric and Rowe Furniture frame, durability and kid and pet friendly makes white or cream safe.
The navy tweed sofa paired with Cisco Home‘s boucle plum fabric was fresh and colorful.
Soft and comfortable, this Norwalk sofa was absolutely hands down one of the most comfortable bouclé cream sectional sofas I’ve ever sat on! Plus, it’s made in the USA, and the company is owned by its employees! That’s right! In 2020, the employees bought back their own company with a female exec as the leader!
Are Bouclé fabrics available in patterns?
Absolutely! While most of the patterns featured here are solid Boucle fabrics, the most common patterns for the boucle manufacturing technique, we have bouclé fabrics in Aran Argile, Fair Isle, and Intarsia.
Whimsical Big Bold Fabric Patterns Trend In Upholstery Fabrics
Bold black and white abstract zebras galloping through Norwalk were one of the many fun fabrics we spotted.
Natural woven horizontal stripes in bright hues of orange and Fuschia mixe with reds and pinks colored Cisco fun!
Hiding hyaenas and leopards trailed through the palm florals at Norwalk on this beautiful accent or dining chair.
Typically smaller scale base fabrics are used on upholstery; the Rowe Furniture large-scaled chenille was terrific.
While the indigenous heritage is often forgotten, Norwalk paid homage to elements of native American folk art style women and animals.
It’s time to see the beautiful soft curved furniture in fluid home trends 2022!
Throughout this post, you’ll find the most inspiring trends from Design Influencers Tour – Fall 2021. That was the tour I was invited to attend during High Point Market. I’ve linked them below if you missed any of the other trends; the last post was textured home design trends 2022 that we spotted at the High Point Furniture Market. In this interior design blog post, you’ll find soft curved furniture, organic lines, and feminine silhouettes and curves trend in home design trends 2022.
Curved lines combined with Bouclé fabric make this textured swivel chair soft and practical.
The conversation comes full circle with this spectacular pair of Universal Furniture curved sectional sofas.
Without going too modern, the transitional arched back sofa with curved arms was seamless. It’s not as noticeable in this photo, but Sherril Furniture, the manufacturer did a great job in creating a functional curved front so that a round cocktail table fits nicely.
Just when you might think a sofa table behind a curved back sofa is impossible, we walked into Bernhardt. The curved sofa tables fit the curvature perfectly.
On the mid-century modern forefront, this Rowe Furniture chair with the exposed wood arms curves nicely from the arms to the back legs. Placing this chair where the exposed back shows would be spectacular.
Sculpture in cocktail tables was even fluid with no harsh lines or corners. I could see this pewter-finished Century table becoming a child’s living room haven. With no typical corners and the metal-like finish, the typical marks and toy tracks may not be as evident.
Fluid motions continue in lighting and all types of home accessories. The Hubbardton Forge metal exposed bulb light fixture was a favorite of ours. Speaking favorites, be sure to check our interior design projects. We’ll be placing many of the items you see here on our High Point Trend Report soon!
It’s our official High Point Market Home Trends Report for 2022, including lots of textured home design trends!
I apologize it’s been a while. I had a few back surgeries and have been blessed with a vast amount of work since my recovery. I traveled to High Point, North Carolina, to the High Point Home Furnishings Market a few days ago.
Typically Lori and I go to High Point Market at least once, sometimes twice per year. It’s the most significant international home furnishings show in the world. Touring all of the manufacturer’s showrooms, we see, touch, and sit on all new home furnishings products that we recommend to our interior design clients.
We do not believe in specifying products that we haven’t seen in person, sat in, and confirmed that the vendor or manufacturers are providing great opportunities for humanity globally… Yes, we know what we’re selling and even meet with many of the company owners, who are often the product designers for the items we specify for interior design projects.
Now, we have even more vendors to share with you, our fantastic interior design blog readers.
From my last post, you all know that I announced I was honored to be invited on the Design Influencers Tour – Fall 2021. I want to share all of the home design trends for 2022, so I’ve divided this report into four separate blog posts to include all of the home design trends below…

Textured home design trends are enormous 2022! High Point Furniture Market was full of texture. We believe it’s partly because of comfort and the push for minimalism. In this interior design blog post, you’ll find the texture trend.

Textured home furnishings could be found throughout the millions of square feet of brands we visited. A special thank you for hosting us and choosing us for the tour hosted by High Point Market Authority and the largest and most notable brands in the home furnishings industry!

Design Influencers Tour & I’m On IT!
A special thanks to everyone at High Point Market & Esteem Media
Thank you to the High Point Market Authority (HPMA) for teaming up with Esteem Media to invite me to be on the popular blogger tour during High Point Market in person this fall. After a 3-Market hiatus due to the ongoing pandemic, Fall Market, October 16-20, will host a rebranded tour called the Design Influencers Tour on Sunday, October 17, and Monday, October 18. I’m very excited to be one of the chosen bloggers to attend.
Previously hosted as the Design Bloggers Tour for 9 Markets, the High Point Market Influencers Tour program will bring nine other leading design bloggers and me to High Point Market for a 2-day tour of sponsoring showrooms.
List of Design Bloggers On The Design Influencers Tour
Participating bloggers will visit each sponsor for an up-close look at the exhibitor’s company, showroom, and products during a 45-minute presentation and tour, after which they will then feature and discuss their inspiring finds on their individual blogs and social media accounts. The bloggers selected for this tour include:
Moving forward into 2022, the Design Influencers Tour plans to diversify its team mix to include both design bloggers and design-focused social media influencers. Speaking of which, please be sure to follow my Instagram.
High Point Market says, “This shift will allow for a more impactful and farther-reaching digital footprint in terms of tour coverage and exposure. It also allows the tour to align with a shift Esteem Media made previously when it rebranded their popular conference, the Design Influencers Conference instead of the Design Bloggers Conference.”
“Design influencers are usually design practitioners; something that makes influencer marketing so powerful and reliable for luxury home furnishings marketers. Subsequently, High Point Market becomes the ultimate destination to watch the power of their influence at work,” comments Adam Japko, founder of Esteem Media and the Design Influencers Conference. “Guiding groups of savvy influencers to visit showrooms, develop brand relationships, create authoritative content, learn, and build their authority is an inspiring experience creating meaningful outcomes. After 9 Market tours, this 3-Market pandemic-driven hiatus has made us restlessly eager to get moving again. This return tour, under an appropriately new namesake, sets up as a joyous revival of one of the most exciting weeks for Esteem Media and all the tour participants.”
Who sponsors the High Point Market Design Bloggers Tour, aka. Design Influencers Tour?
Each year sponsors of the Design Bloggers Tour aka. Design Influencers Tour changes.
Sponsors participating in the fall 2021 tour include:
A Note From Tom Conley, President and CEO of the High Point Market Authority Re: The Design Influencers Tour
“The return of this program, along with our other in-person programming for Fall Market, is tremendously exciting,” says Tom Conley, president and CEO of the High Point Market Authority. “The two-day tour connects leading home furnishings brands to new audiences and introduces design aficionados to understand better the range and capabilities of our great sponsored exhibitors.”

Backyard Patio Ideas
Like its namesake, indicating a strong wish or desire, the grounds showcase all possible and dream-worthy in garden design through a study of shapes and negative space, where the interplay of softness and hard edge creates an intriguing contrast. Inspired by the Italian gardens of Villa Caprarola, each piece and plant was selected to create dramatic tension and visual interest. In contrast, planning the next idle pastime.

To start, Moore Tree Company removed struggling, overgrown trees that obscured views of the home. The landscape at the entry to the home was kept low and minimal, primarily composed of cloud-form pruned Boxwoods, groundcover, low plantings, and gravel to highlight the architecture.
Secondary Driveway
The secondary driveway spur that goes to the left of the home has been enhanced by the placement of a wood and steel pergola that mimics and reinforces the flat arch over the home’s doorway and recalls similar elements in Monet’s garden and the vine-covered structures found at Chateau de Villandry in the Loire Valley.
Lambert’s new Hyacinth Bean Vine-covered structure provides a leafy green tunnel that creates a shady reprieve and turns the driveway axis into a long vista, terminating with a view of an antique French limestone cartouche, backed by a Holly screen wall.
The Vintner’s Meadow, an axial garden to the right side of the parking court, counterbalances the tunnel on the left and pays homage to the Loire Valley region’s vineyards. It is defined by the crisp edges of two crescent-shaped sculptural berms, which have been planted with meadow-like species, punctuated by a scattering of fall-blooming bulbs. A clipped Holly hedge is a strong juxtaposition to the meadow plantings in the foreground and defines a circular lawn panel.
A bosque of four pleached Trident Maples, underplanted with drifts of cloud-form Boxwoods, anchors the four corners of the auto court, reinforces the sense of space, and artfully frames one’s view of the chateau-style home’s entry.
The garden’s overall character is enhanced by handcrafted painted mahogany planter boxes and a custom bench by Buxus Bespoke Garden Furnishings.
Benjamin Moore Black Window Frames on a Luxurious Dallas Estate
Black window frames on the home’s front were repainted in a Benjamin Moore color reminiscent of a light French blue.
French Limestone Fountain & Gravel Terrace
Pittet Architecturals provided the hand-carved circa 1900 French limestone fountain to serve as an anchor for the dining room view court. The hushed crunching sound underfoot of a small Lambert’s Blend gravel terrace, which surrounds the fountain feature, enhances the tactile experience and reinforces the French countryside’s essence for the homeowners without their ever having to leave Dallas.
The Back Staircase and Downstairs Landing, named Emerald Garden, is designed by Melissa Morgan of M Interiors in San Antonio, Texas. Morgan’s design seeks to serve as more than an area of transition, but rather as a tranquility and reflection place.
Morgan says, “My aim was to elevate this space and make it a celebrated destination that can serve as the heart of the home and have meaning, rather than merely connect one to other spaces in the house.”
Her choices of unique furnishings and accessories, a blending of new pieces with antiques, stylish textiles, and a mix of contemporary and classical art highlight an appreciation for detail and the ability to create a timeless interior design aesthetic. Emerald Garden references the magnificent, custom wallcovering by Gracie Studios. Applied to walls and up the stairs, the saturated green is balanced with deep blues against flowering trees.
A joyful cast of characters–birds, cicadas, woodpeckers, hedgehogs, daisies, ladybugs, bees, butterflies, favorites hand-selected by Morgan, punctuate the background. Richly detailed and sweeping in scope, the surface offers a delightful storytelling component and lacquer application, an added sheen. A custom runner, sisal floor covering, and Oriental rug from Retorra brings a delicate warmth and rich neutral tonality to the room.
The spacious landing at the stairwell base is well suited as an area for seating and contemplation. Morgan’s choice of a refined settee by Hutton Home is coupled with a pair of Louis XVI-style fauteuils upholstered in Claremont leopard fabric.
The inspired Italian 18th-century walnut writing table from Robuck is accompanied by a Dmitriy & Co. desk chair in Holland & Sherry blue leather, a perfect locale for writing letters, taking coffee, or enjoying a moment to compose thoughts.
A pair of blue porcelain lamps and custom shades, both from Vaughan, offer a graceful compliment. A gilded gold mirror from Embree & Lake serves as a focal point and reflects the impactful wallcovering and surroundings. Morgan’s decision to install a pair of draperies from The Shade Store brings symmetry and depth to this elevated and inviting space.
Partners for the back staircase and landings include Gracie Studios, Retorra, Vaughan, Holland & Sherry, Galerie des Lampes, David Iatesta, David Sutherland, Culp Associates, George Cameron Nash, Holland & Sherry, Robuck, Embree & Lake, Claremont, Samuel & Sons, The Shade Store, Benjamin Moore, IG Art, Forbes & Lomax, Milan Design & Build and Three Branches Floral.

I hoped you enjoyed the inaugural Kips Bay Dallas showhouse. I would have participated myself but I had sooo many great projects going on that I couldn’t work it in. I wanted you all to enjoy the tour as much as I did.
Doniphan Moore Luxurious Master Bathroom Interior Design in Kips Bay Dallas Designer Showhouse
For the inaugural Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, Dallas-based interior designer Doniphan Moore created “Bathed in Moonlight” a sumptuously layered master bathroom design and lavish dressing closet for intimate moments to be savored.
Wallpapers by de Gournay, inspired by Gustav Klimt and Japanese textile designs, dance along the walls. Their sense of romance, metallics, and jewel tones bring continuity to the master suite.

For the gallery, Margaret Naeve Parker started with a center table from Black Creek Mercantile with a dramatic hanging fixture installation from Apparatus. This not only provides a dramatic entry but also separates the long gallery into two spaces.
The Art Gallery Artists
The art consists of Paul Lee, Amanda Martinez, and Jason Karolak – all from David Shelton Gallery. Margaret played with scale for the art, opting for a small, yet powerful piece on some of the larger walls in the gallery. The art as a whole is a good collection of materials, texture, and composition.
Custom Furniture For the Powder Room
For the gallery, even the furniture and lighting are a piece of art in their own way from the Green River project stool to the early 20th-century pieces. The neutral pallet created a very moody powder room. Visit Custom Furniture Ideas
Changed The Powder Room Toilet Location
For this space, Margaret changed the toilet’s location to allow for a full wall-to-wall integrated stone vanity and sink.
Dark Black Tile Handhoned Tiles with Oak Flooring w/ Gold Lighting
She partnered with Cle Tile for the walls to install a 4″x4″ black zellige tile. To complement the dark walls, she elected to install a wide-plank, white oak floor. Lighting was again from Apparatus Studio, and she complimented that with a vintage mirror sourced from Hollywood at Home in Los Angeles.
Removed a Utility Closet
There was an awkward utility closet within the existing powder room that did not work with the flow. Accordingly, Margaret elected to close off the space and create an inset plaster shelving installation that really finished the powder room. While both rooms could stand alone, there is a common thread that not only connects both spaces but reflects a beautiful powder room design aesthetic. Check out for Contemporary Home Decor Ideas

Barrel Vaulted Ceilings in the Family Room Ideas
Much like one of my favorite recent dining rooms with a groin-vaulted ceiling, this barrel-vaulted ceiling and wall of windows overlooking the pool set a handsome scene, which is further enriched by the finish palette of espresso and olive.
Antique Rugs & a Braided Hemp Floor
The earthy hues carry into the furnishings, with cozy linens, wools, and velvets set against antique rugs and a braided hemp floor. As is often the case in our work, the decoration is a studious blend of textures, time periods, and levels of refinement. Lines are thoughtfully blurred between old and new, casual and formal, composed and improvised.
A sense of fantasy permeates the scheme. While decidedly not a rumpus room, space encourages the eye to travel and the mind to wander. Convene with your family – be they children or adult, related or chosen – and tell your stories. Check out for interior designer blogs.

4 Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas & How To Decorate Rooms With Angled Walls or Ceilings
Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas That I Love From This Kips Bay Dallas Designers Showhouse
1.
How To Give The Room Height With a Custom Drapery Bed Canopy
A custom drapery bed canopy instantly makes a room look taller and more dramatic. Custom draperies are almost always a necessity as most ready-made draperies are not backed with a second fabric nor are they tall enough for rooms over eight feet in height. Custom draperies can be ordered through us or any other custom window treatment workroom or window coverings provider. We ship window treatments throughout the continental US and we’ll help you find a local installer to complete the installation.
For this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, Houston designersWells Design created an elegant guest bedroom with a sophisticated world traveler in mind. Breakfast can be luxuriously enjoyed in bed with Everyday Elegance tableware. The beautiful white crisp linen bedding by Leontine Linens is surrounded by a custom floor-to-ceiling drapery canopy of Rose Cumming Chintz hanging overhead.

2.
Mix Contemporary Art With Traditional Furnishings & Decor
Contemporary art ornaments the custom upholstered fabric walls. The custom-colored Namay Samay fabric absorbs sound and provides texture. English design influences are featured alongside classic American design elements, for a sumptuous retreat that balances beauty with comfort.
To give a traditionally furnished room a more modern, updated look, use modern artwork. Notice how the artwork is not matchy-matchy in color tones, but it blends in with the other hues nicely.

3.
Layer Rugs On Top of Carpet
Layering area rugs on top of carpet is a great way to introduce patterns without committing to the pattern in wall-to-wall carpet long term. Oftentimes, as interior designers, we struggle with finding patterned carpets in the correct shades and colors that we want for clients. To get the pattern without either the cost or commitment or when the patterns we want are not available in wall-to-wall carpets, we layer a rug on top of low-pile carpets.
How To Layer Rugs On Top of Carpet?
Layering rugs on top of the carpet is fairly simple as long as the carpet is a low pile carpet or short carpet. Most carpets are solid or tone on tone so layering a patterned rug can give a room a more updated modern look. First, order the appropriately sized rug for your room and Smart Stripe Carpet Tape or another tape designed to stick to the carpet. While double-sided duct tape will work, Smart Stripe Carpet Tape is designed and formulated specifically for this application.
Smart Stripe Carpet Tape is a floor marking tape specially designed to stick to carpets. The adhesive won’t leave a residue after it’s removed, even when the tape has been on the carpet for an extended period of time. This tape is tear, stretch, and curl resistant, meaning you won’t need to be concerned about damaging it during use such as walking on the rug daily. Your tape lines will stay where you need them to. Smart StripeCarpet Tape is also resistant to plenty of other industrial conditions such as chemical spills, water, and UV rays, so you can install it and not worry about it. Plus it has a quick-release liner for easy installation.
In the Dallas Interior Designers Showhouse by Kips Bay, the Retorra rug and bespoke étagère punctuate the room, which has a soothing color palette, incorporating both earth and jewel tones.

How To Paint Rooms With Angled Walls or Rooms With Angled Ceilings?
The most important thing to consider when space planning or decorating a room with angled walls is to consider the height of the room. If the ceiling is low, we always recommend running the wall treatments such as wallpaper patterns or wall paint color onto the angled parts.
The Trick To Painting Rooms With Angled Ceilings
When the walls are painted, we most often paint the room all of the same flat sheens. If the walls are at risk of being touched daily, we use satin paint on the walls and the same color of paint in a flat finish for the ceiling.
Most often we refrain from larger patterns with angled ceilings unless we plan to run the pattern throughout the entire room.

Inspiring New House Dining Room Makeover with White Upholstered Dining Room Chairs & a Beautiful Groin Vault Ceiling by Interior Designer Dallas TX
What comes to your mind when you look at this Dining room with custom white upholstered dining room chairs? Can you feel the wonder of the historical groin vault ceiling mixed with modern furnishings? Dining rooms are congregation spaces, and it is a place where the friends & family come together. They sit, dine, and laugh.
While doing so, we want our interior design clients to be happy with their furnishings and furniture. We don’t want unnecessary accessories or table arrangements obstructing conversation.
Welcome back to the Warren’s Dallas home! Now let’s go through…
The Most Important Elements of the Warren Dining Room Interior Design Ideas
1. Dining Room Chair Frame Selection is Critical. Dining Room Chairs Must Be Comfortable & The Right Chair Height To Go With Your Table.
And…the chairs must look good!
Okay, you get the idea that dining rooms are the hub for great conversations, but why am I pointing out the white upholstered dining chairs? The white upholstered dining chairs are not something most homeowners will opt for.
Why We Opted For White Dining Room Chairs
Typically people are terrified of white furniture, especially in dining rooms. Red wine stains don’t easily clean up from most upholstery or rugs. {That reminds me. I need to write a post to tell you “How To Get Red Wine Stains Out of Carpets, Rugs & Upholstery”}. Check out Mural IdeasModern DesignLuxury Interior DesignLuxe InteriorsHome Design Trends 2020
Most importantly, they are comfortable and the right height for the table. How many times have you been stuck sitting at an uncomfortable dining table for hours?
The Warren’s existing dining room chairs had great lines, and they were happy with the comfortability and overall look of the scale in the room. Plus, upholstering the chairs gave us a lot of options as we could choose any fabric. And…our upholsterer doesn’t take anywhere near as long to upholster as waiting on ordering new dining chairs.
It is essential to consider all of the aspects down to every detail, including color, furniture, layout, etc., to do justice with the family hub, like choosing upholstered dining room design ideas chairs with this table.
As I mentioned in the kitchen island makeover, while the Warren’s have no children, they have nieces and nephews. Spills are the last thing they want to worry about when they entertain.
The dining room sets with upholstered chairs were awesome. Being comfortable, upholstered dining chairs were a good choice, but the chairs’ dark colors blended in with the table, leaving no visual separation between them.
The sculptures, art, and architectural elements in the house were incredible, but the tones were too dark.
Upholstered dining room chairs with arms for the host and hostess chairs were great frames!
2. Select Durable Performance Fabrics For Dining Chairs. The Ultra-Durable White Fabric For Dining Room Chairs Accented by Coral Fabric Welt
Selecting fabrics for dining chairs is critical, especially when the chairs are WHITE.
We handpicked the fabric to match the surrounding interior and make the space lively for the upholstered dining room chairs. The white upholstered dining chairs generate a more modern and fresh feeling within the entire room. In contrast, we’ve reversed the side chair upholstery on end chairs.
We detailed the upholstered dining room chairs and looked into other furniture, and selected a suitable fabric for them. Often we are asked…
What Type of Fabric Is Best For Dining Room Chairs?
The best type of fabric for dining room chairs, especially white dining room chairs, is either leather, faux leather, or ultra-durable
What are the most durable fabrics for upholstered furniture?
Leather. Although leather is the most durable choice for furniture. It often outlasts the test of time. It can be costly, but it looks great and is available in hundreds of colors. If there is not a color you like available, it can be custom-dyed. Leather is a very durable fabric, especially if taken care of properly.
Microfibre. Most ultra-durable performance fabrics are microfiber
The Warrens are of American Japanese heritage and wanted to exhibit their family antiques in their new home. They had a keen interest in displaying Asian swords, which were showcased in some parts of the home and other sculptures and art.
4. Accentuate the Architecture in the Dining Room.
The Warren’s NEW house had a unique groin vault ceiling, which wasn’t highlighted but sure grabbed our attention on the initial design consultation! We then set out to make this room grandeur. The challenge was to incorporate the curio cabinets’ existing low height, housing Warren’s family collections with harmony.
Before we dive deeper, do you know what exactly a Groin Vault is?Don’t worry! I’ll make your lives simpler.
The Best Groin Vault Ceiling Images
What is a groin vault ceiling?
A groin vault is an arched structure that holds the ceiling. It is typically constructed by creating two barrel vaults, much like two semi-circles, with a cross in the middle. It’s sometimes also referred to as the cross vault because of the ‘X’ shape. The groin vaults date back to ancient Roman architecture.
How To Accentuate a Groin Vault Ceiling?
Groin vault ceilings in historical eras were framed with beautiful moldings, art, or trims of some sort. To modernize a room with a groin vault ceiling, simpler trims and molding can be used and painted in a contrasting color or accent color.
To celebrate the groin ceiling vault, we had a border design painting that directs the eye upward. Faux finishers can use handpainted techniques or stencils. In the case of the Warren’s dining room (shown below), painted a stripe on the groin vault then overlayed stencils in a lighter silver leaf to give the vault a metallic look.
The Revamped Dining Room With Upholstered Dining Room Chairs & A Grandeur Groin Vault Ceiling
Behold! The dark Dining room becomes a well lit comfortable space for the family congregation. The white upholstered dining chairs reflect the bright surroundings and create an appealing contrast with the table.
To make the space more peaceful, we added upholstery on the dining chairs, flanked the window with patterned panels to allow diffused light, and added a rug underneath the white upholstered dining chairs.
Here are a few of the other things that we did to create harmony to incorporate the older furnishings with new, more modern furnishings in the dining room…
5. Add Accessories & Art Above The Cabinets To Draw The Eye Up To The Groin Vault Ceiling
Since the Warrens wanted to keep the shorter height cabinets competing with the dining room’s vast height, to visually make the cabinets look taller and harmoniously fit with the rest of the room, we added a taller arched mirror to go in between the curio cabinets.
The mirror instantly gave the cabinets visual height and reflected more light into the otherwise dark dining room.
To introduce more of the Asian flare, we used patterned blue vases, which, like the upholstered dining room chairs, give the room a fresh, classically modern feel.
If you’ve seen my own kitchen, you know how much I love blue & white! Click here to see my kitchen design.
We introduced a large contemporary painting to pull all of the colors together since we needed more height and volume to take the eye movement upward toward the groin vault ceiling. We placed this piece of modern artwork above the buffet.
Intricate Details Of The Furniture Of The White Upholstered Dining Chairs
How To Pick The Right Upholstered Dining Room Chairs with Arms?
First, it’s important to get the right seat height for dining room chairs. Measure your table from the floor to the top. A good height for chairs is approximately 10-12″ from the top of the chair seat to the top of the table. When choosing an upholstered dining room chair with arms, be sure you measure the arm height to ensure it will go underneath the table’s top.
How to Match Dining Room Sets with Upholstered Chairs?
Matching dining room sets with upholstered chairs are based on style, function, and visual taste. It’s okay to mix contemporary tables with traditional chairs or vice versa. The function and scale of mixing and matching dining room tables and chairs are the most crucial; it’s one of our favorite things to do as interior designers.
What Is Upholstery?
Upholstery is fabric, stuffing, and other materials used in upholstering. An upholsterer is a craft, trade, or business of upholstering. The result of upholstery is furniture covered with textile material, hangings, curtains, and the like: a general term for all such interior decorations and fittings made with textiles.
Almost all interior designers work with upholsterers to create new custom furniture or recover existing chairs, ottomans, or other furniture in new fabrics.
How Do You Choose the Best Groin Vault Ceiling Framing?
An engineer, builder, or architect typically works with interior designers to choose the best groin vault ceiling framing styles for a home or commercial space. Groin vault ceilings leave no error and are one of the master forms of the building that meets perfection.
How to Upholster The Back of a Dining Room Chair?
Upholstering the back of a dining room chair varies depending on the chair frame. Some dining room chairs can be upholstered without removing the interior upholstery. If the back of the chair fabric overlaps the interior fabric, the back can be removed without upholstering the other side.
If there are no visible signs the back upholstery overlaps the interior, it’s typically because the back was applied from the reverse side of the chair, meaning the seat side of the back and the back must both be upholstered at the same time or with careful removal of the fabrics you may be trying to preserve. My Favorite: Morning Room Ideas From An Amazing Transitional Home Design With Beautiful Japanese Flair
The morning room is one of my favorite rooms in the Warren’s beautiful, freshly built Dallas home, maybe because mornings are my favorite.
Not every home design has a morning room, and I realize many people may not be familiar with the term morning room. Soooo…what is a morning room?
What is a morning room? What is a morning room in a house?
Historically, the term “morning room” originated from rooms that were mainly used in the mornings in the early 1800s. These rooms usually had eastern exposures and large windows to take advantage of the sunlight.
Morning rooms can be located off the master suite, near the dining room, or in areas we consider formal living rooms or keeping rooms. Often, people in America call morning rooms and keeping rooms the same type of room.
A keeping room is actually a secondary living room that connects to the kitchen area. In colonial times, keeping rooms were dubbed keeping rooms because the heat from the kitchen kept the keeping room warm, making it one of the few heated areas in the house.
In this case, you’re probably asking – is this really a morning room or a keeping room. Technically, it could be considered either. Because of the eastern sun exposure, we prefer to refer to it as the morning room.
Before | Morning Room Design Ideas
A few months back, we began working with the Warren’s. They called us to help furnish and design their brand new home. Considering the house was brand new, there would be cosmetic changes.
Keeping with the family’s Japanese American heritage, the custom carved cherry blossom art panels on the doors in this morning room adds a unique and very personal touch.
As if you couldn’t tell. I love these doors! Thank you for loving them as much as we did during our presentation, Mr. & Mrs. Warren!
All morning room furniture should be comfortable and user-friendly per the uses of the room. Considering the Warren’s don’t have children of their own, we didn’t stress over light-colored furniture in the morning room.
Furnishings & Morning Room Furniture Ideas
A cozy seating area anchored by the abstract area rug reduces noise and makes the room feel relaxing. We added pops of terracotta and blue-green into the seating area through the leather chairs and accent pillows. We pulled the seating area together by adding a neutral abstract area rug. This has quickly become the go-to spot in the client’s home.
Off of the kitchen, this morning room becomes the focal point through a Williamsburg blue geometric patterned wallpaper. Creating focal points is always a good idea.
The Arched Door Ways
The offset arched doorways leading to other rooms allow sunlight to pour in every morning.
The morning room decor and furnishings are normally designed for reading, providing a place for morning coffee or drinks. Morning room space can also be for casual family activities such as games or doing homework. It is separate from the dining room. It is the place to relax and kickstart morning routines. Visit here for Fireplace Design home decor ideas style
Our main goal was to ensure we had a flow of colors in the home, including navy, teal, and terracotta. This area is connected to the kitchen, and the goal was to create a seating area that feels like its own separate, cozy space. We wanted to add color and texture to make the morning room the entire area’s focal point. Did this post give you a few good ideas for your morning room? Do you have more questions? If so, drop me a comment below.
When the Warren’s called us for the first design appointment to their new Dallas home, we fell in love with the builder’s details. The vaulted ceiling living room with exposed wood beams was one of our favorite architectural elements.
Before I show you the before and after photos of the vaulted ceiling and the custom furnishings, art, custom window treatments, rug, and see the beautiful family heirloom kimono, let’s get a few of the most common questions out of the way. We’re often asked these questions here D’KOR HOMEblog and as Dallas designers…
What is a vaulted ceiling?
A vault is an architectural by element that is normally self-supporting arched or pitched form. In America, the most common vault occurs in large luxury homes or commercial spaces. Visually the vaults cover a space with the ceiling or roof. The simplest kind of vault is an A-frame pitched vault or barrel vault, generally semicircular. The barrel vault is a continuous arch, the length being greater than its diameter.
Do Vaulted Ceilings Add Value To a Home?
Yes! Vaulted ceilings can add value to a house. Rooms with vaulted ceilings tend to have larger windows, which means that natural light can fill the room more easily. Windows of almost any type cost money and the larger the windows are, the more they cost. The more windows cost, the more value it tends to add to a home. Regardless of the energy costs, vaulted ceilings generally add value to homes as long as the finishes on exposed beams or the ceilings don’t appear outdated.
Is a Vaulted Ceiling worth the cost?
Dramatic vaulted ceilings can take advantage of otherwise wasted roof space in a room. They give a visual appearance to add volume and height to a room. Vaulted ceilings do make your home appear larger than it actually is. Vaulted ceilings with large windows allow a lot of natural light. Depending on the area, especially Dallas, Atlanta, or other areas with a varying climate, vaulted ceilings can either help or hurt your energy expenses, such as your power bills.
BEFORE | Vaulted Ceiling Living Room w/ Exposed Wood Beams
When Mrs. Warren called my Dallas Design Firm looking for help to decorate her new home, she wanted help transitioning into a new design style from traditional to transitional while pulling in her unique tastes.
We had a great canvas with which to work with the open floor plan, high ceilings, and beautiful architecture. It was about making this house into the home Mrs. Warren has always envisioned living in and she would feel proud to call her own home.
We also focused on ensuring to incorporate a happy balance and transition the client’s American Japanese heritage by allowing their collections of artifacts and family collectibles to take precedence with new more modern furnishings and art.
Our Design Goals & The Plan
Our main goal was to ensure we had a flow of her colors in the home, including navy, teal, and terracotta. In the living room, we had tons of wall space surrounding the fireplace and wanted to design a pair of custom cabinets to show off the client’s unique artifacts. With the high ceilings, we were intensively focused on making the living room cozier and the furniture was to scale. We also needed to replace the existing area rug as the current one was too small for space.
AFTER | The Interior Design Plan | Custom Furniture & Custom Window Panels
Custom Cabinets That Look Like Antiques
Custom cabinets flank the fireplace to showcase the family’s heirlooms passed on for generations. The sofas and chairs seating area is anchored by a large area rug reflective of an antique rug. No, it’s not an antique but it does look like it. We decided to add cabinets on both sides of the fireplace to add a display for the client’s artifacts and add to the cozy, personalized feel we wanted for the living room.
Through mixed metals and natural elements, we created a beautiful and inviting room that is relaxing and all-encompassing to the client’s dreams.
Selecting Colors, Fabrics & Textures That Work Together
In the other areas, such as the kitchen, dining room, library, foyer, morning room of the home, we had utilized navy blue. We continued the color flow in the living room and introduced terracotta touches and bluish green teal color throughout.
The addition of these colors also helped bring warmth into the interior design ideas for home, which otherwise could feel cold with the tall ceilings.
By changing the furniture’s layout with the sofas in an “L” shape and the chairs, we created a cozy space for gathering and entertaining. Placing the chairs with the backs towards the foyer gives a beautiful view of the textured pattern contrast with the deep solid navy sofas as one enters the home while also allowing the eye to see through the room.
With the abundance of seating, we placed an open glass cocktail table with a lacquered natural wood base to keep the seating from feeling too heavy.
We added a larger area rug to anchor the gathering area, making it feel bigger. Using mixed metals and natural elements, we created a beautiful and inviting room that pulls the Warren’s guests further into the home.
Custom Hunter Douglas Window Coverings & Custom Drapery Panels
Privacy is always important for our clients. Ease of use with motorized Hunter Douglas window coverings is key to helping our clients use smart home voice commands to easily raise and lower window shades existed.
The Hunter Douglas roman shades in a more neutral dark gray blend in nicely with the varied tones of stone archways.
How To Introduce Contemporary Art Into a Transitional Design?
It’s easy! First, do not fear! Contemporary art has a life on its own. Just go with it and allow it to dominate the space. Build the color palette around it, or let it be – ART!
We loved the idea of introducing orangy terracotta pillows with the deep navy velvet sofa for the Warren’s. Instead of ignoring the bold orange, we incorporated it into the living room design plan.
Exposed Wood Beam Vaulted Ceiling Beam Details
Details and scale are critical with a wood beam vaulted ceiling. The beam size must be much larger in scale than you will imagine before it’s installed. Often when we are working with builders and homeowners during the new build phase, they are shocked when selecting beams.
Being the powder room is one of the most retreated to rooms in the home, the interior design and comfortability are critical. Powder room ideas are often equally as fun as they can be entertaining.
In the Warren’s new Dallas home, we had great architectural details to work with. Look at those amazing arched doorways. Their new powder room just needed a little brightening to blend with their new kitchen with the industrial hood vent, the beautiful dining room ceiling, the gorgeous foyer, the hidden library, and the rest of the house.
Throughout this powder room interior design blog, you’ll be able to see the before and after makeover of the Warren’s new powder room.
Before | Powder Room Ideas
First, the powder room bones were great. I love the arched doorways, flooring, and even the primary paint color for both the walls and the powder room vanity.
The powder room vanity was already nicely distressed in a beautiful cornflower blue hue.
Problem With The Powder Room Vanity Color & Wall Color
The powder room wall color problem is that the walls and vanity were almost the same color. Only the finish separated the two. The bathroom vanity was distressed, and the wall plaster was skimmed in an uneven, more rustic finish.
The photos look completely different hues, but I promise the vanity color was kept as we found it. My phone photos are really dark, so you may think it looks gray, but it was already blue.
Powder Room Wallpaper Ideas
We wanted to keep on budget and the changes bright and simple. We selected this really cool and finely detailed dragonfly wallcovering to paper the vanity area.
Chrome Plumbing & Lighting Fixtures Work As a Mirror
In this powder room, the existing plumbing fixtures and light fixtures were brand new and chrome, so they worked nicely.
P.S. Pin this…
Do I need to change out my old chrome fixtures to go with other metals?
Chrome is always a safe and good metal finish choice, and it blends with almost every other metallic or metal surface. Chrome acts as a mirror as it simply mirrors other surrounding surfaces without dominating, much like golds or brass tones. This is one of the many reasons, aside from its economic value, that builders most often love using chrome.
Powder Room Wallpaper Ideas
Notice how much brighter the same powder room with the same vanity, same wall color in the water closet, and the same mirror and light fixtures look after the dragonfly wallpaper was installed.
Powder room wallpapers the best way to transform a room and perfect small sink and bright tile and walls. Make your room gets a beautiful makeover with wallpaper and a custom vanity. Use good color for refreshing touch that you give a feeling of refining and comfortable.

Best Foyer Ideas Eliciting Foyer Definition | Ways To Maximize Foyer Lighting And Foyer Table Placement
Are you interested in exploring Foyer Ideas? First, we need to understand the role of a foyer.
Foyer Definition
What is a Foyer?
A foyer is at the entry areas of a home, and it serves as the lobby of the home. The foyer is larger than a hallway, and it transitions from the front door to other rooms of the home. A well-designed entrance foyer with good foyer lighting should be welcoming and pleasing. The foyer is the first impression of your home. It sets the visual and functional interior design experience for the remainder of the house. There are many great foyer ideas, but foyer lighting and furniture placement are crucial elements to consider when designing a foyer.
This post will take you through some of the best foyer ideas to consider from our client’s Dallas TX home. I’ll take you through her foyer design and the process we go through for our many Dallas Interior design clients. I’ll show you the foyer lights effect and what impact small gestures like the placement of console tables, the ceiling, art, and wall details can say about your home.
The Warren Foyer Redesign | Best Foyer Ideas
What Our Client’s Like
The Warrens had a great taste for botanicals, nature, butterflies, and especially violets and orchids. We considered all of their likes while designing & helping them furnish their entire brand new home, including this foyer (see before and after photos below) and their dining room and kitchen I wrote about in my last couple of interior design blogs.
Before Our Design Intervention
The foyer had sufficient floor tiles space with beautiful herringbone patterned wood flooring—one of my favorite patterns.
Overall the entrance came across as dark. We wanted to make a welcoming entrance so that the family and their friends are delighted while entering the home. As mentioned in my other foyer ideas interior design blog posts, there is no better place to say “welcome to our home, here’s a bit about us” than the foyer entranceway.
How To Brighten Up Gray Walls In a Foyer
The walls and ceiling were both freshly painted in a light cool gray hue, yet the foyer felt dark. Our focus was to visually brighten up the foyer while keeping the gray color tone to maintain the color flow with the other dining room, library, kitchen, morning room, waiting room and other rooms.
The ceiling was also the same gray color palette as the gray walls, even though it appears much darker in my before photo.
Switch Out The Bench For Long Shallow Depth Foyer Entry Table
The Floor Plan
As I mentioned earlier, the foyer is like a welcome lobby for the home. Some home lobbies have plenty of space for chairs, sofas, settees, or benches. In this foyer, we were limited on wall space.
Foyer Table
The best solution was to replace the bench with a shallow depth tall foyer table. The bench felt a little out of place. It was deep and needed really needed a skinny shallow table versus seating.
Tell a Story With Your Art
We considered turning the blank wall into an art curation space giving it an overall interest to tell a story about the homeowner’s likes and passions. With the beautifully crafted architecture and trim on the door frames, we had limited space to create impact with the art.
With the large trim work on the door frames, we wanted to continue the picture framing feel with framed art on the wall.
Foyer Redesign | Best Foyer Ideas and Foyer Lighting
Process Of Redesigning The Foyer
We didn’t just jump to conclusions with our foyer ideas. We tested which design idea suits best and then concluded whether we have to replace the foyer table, consider the quality of foyer lighting, paint the ceiling, or put up artwork on the blank wall.
Consideration Of Artwork
Art is a very personal choice. To help our clients decide on their favorite art for their foyer, we created all our foyer art ideas in our virtual 3D software. Then we presented the Warrens with the best options to choose from both visually and with costs.
To give them the full picture of how the art collections would be installed before they bought, we 3-D rendered each set of art that we recommended.
Ways To Lighten Up a Dark Foyer Without Changing Out The Foyer Light
Finally, here it is! A pleasant and well-lit Foyer that greets and welcomes everyone as they pass through. Notice that we did not change out the light fixture! Instead, we changed the ceiling color, added a pendant light, bright area rugs and art by local artist – Lyndale Lewis!
Remember to save this post to your Pinterest boards for later – pin this:
Changed The Foyer Ceiling Color With Artistry Details
Many foyer ideas to begin with, yet we decided to work with a mostly ignored element. I like to consider it the fifth wall – the ceiling. As we had minimal wall space, so we made the ceiling work. Although we curated artwork on the wall, we made the ceiling a piece of art in itself.
Starting with painting the ceiling a dark navy blue to coordinate with the front door, we went deep and dark with the ceiling color.
Then our amazingly talented Dallas local artist, Lyndale Lewishand-painted the ceiling details to create a nice visual flow with the nearby dining room ceiling.
Not only does the ceiling stand out, it visually makes the foyer appear larger! It also makes a great contrast with the grey walls of the foyer and carries the navy sets the tone throughout the house.
Believe it or not, most often dark ceiling makes rooms and spaces feel larger than they really are.
Foyer Ideas | Dallas Interior Designers
Wall Art Curation And Foyer Table
We wanted the wall art to be apart of the foyer and complement the remainder of the house, but we didn’t want the art on the walls to be overpowering in the pass-through Foyer.

The kitchen is often the busiest place in our homes, with stuff crawling out of our kitchen cabinets. Some may belong, and other things need an organizational home of their own. The Warren Kitchen Remodel Project
When the Warren’s called us, they gave us a list of loving everything from antique cars to permission to include Bible verses, which were done in various parts of their beautiful home. They had art and accessories that were family heirlooms. You’ll get to see where we used them throughout their home.
How We Selected Kitchen Colors
Remember, psychology goes a long way when designing any space—especially the heart of the home. With a love of flowers and orchids to take the stage, we created the neutral backdrop for Mrs. Warren’s nieces and nephews to visit comfortably and the future Warren pets to be at home in. Even though the Warren’s don’t have kids in their house daily, the colors and fabrics can easily transition as their life sees fit.
Industrial Hood Vent Ideas For Traditional Kitchens | Dallas Interior Designers | Kitchen Designers in Dallas TX
The kitchen had a central island that occupied a large area but the navy paint felt dark and heavy. A kitchen island makeover would lighten up the over all kitchen and although we didn’t touch the other kitchen cabinets –they look fresh and light. We loved the finish on the industrial hood vent was a prominent feature of the space.
The Old Kitchen Formal Dining Furniture Was Traditional, Dark & Drabby, Simply Not a Fit For a Modern Kitchen Makeover
The breakfast nook dining furniture needed a modern design more conversational feel. There’s nothing wrong with using formal dining furniture in a breakfast nook. But a long rectangular dining table wasn’t very comfortable nor did it fit the space. Why? Have you ever been to a professional meeting? You’ll notice that this type of seating arrangement is employed for a formal environment. So, we offered our client a new custom kitchen dining furniture.
Customized furniture is always the best choice as it is tailored to your taste, function, and space. Your home is meant to give you a peaceful environment, a place where you interact, converse and relax outside of the formal atmosphere. And a piece of dining furniture that subconsciously reminds you of a formal environment will always keep you upright, which is quite the opposite of being relaxed.
The Warren’s didn’t really want a formal vibe. While they don’t have children of their own, they wanted a comfortable relaxing environment to use daily and to entertain their nieces and nephews.
And that’s exactly why we suggested a new custom kitchen breakfast nook dining table with upholstered chairs in a light fabric. The Warren’s loved it. Don’t worry! I’ll show you how we turned this kitchen makeover into a modern, livable, fun, interactive space for our client.
After Our Makeover Magic Begins | A Walk Through The Process
Alas! It looked like after doing a complete kitchen island makeover, aka refinishing the kitchen cabinets to compliment the industrial hood vent and designing new custom kitchen dining furniture for the Warren family, here was the plan.
A home is a place for solitude, and it has an emotional attachment to its user. The Warrens entrusted us with their house. We wanted to turn it into a home. And we did our best to comprehend what the client wants and then translate it into reality. And they loved how the industrial hood vent better coordinated with kitchen island makeover. They especially adored the new custom kitchen dining furniture. It’s an amazing feeling when you see your clients satisfied with the results of their home designs, especially when it’s the heart of the home – the kitchen!
Professional Kitchen Design Process
Our process didn’t just entail redecorating the kitchen or Warren’s house. Instead, it was a transition from a brand new house to a home. Although We did a kitchen Island makeover, designed new custom kitchen dining furniture including new custom barstools, introduced a mix of new accessories, custom window treatments, and other changes throughout other rooms of Warren’s new home. We began the project when they book a complementary interior design consultation. During an in-home design appointment obtained a blueprint of the home, and the design planning process began.
Create a 3D Design Rendering From a Blueprint or House Plans
We start the interior designer blogs process by first creating a furniture layout on the floor plan, Not every house comes with a set of house plans so sometimes we have to measure the entire house. It will save you a bit of money as it saves us time.
Floor Plan Design Process
First, we reviewed the home’s layout. You might be surprised that the architectural layout of this house is stunning. The open floor plan allows for various interior options. The high ceilings provided grandeur and traditional home decor ideas architecture to work with. From then on, we started imagining the space as a whole. You’re just seeing this kitchen with custom kitchen dining furniture first.
Kitchen Cabinets & Kitchen Island Makeover
We wanted to do a kitchen island makeover because the island’s interior design by style and the hood vent cabinetry were like outer space meeting French Proventional. The addition of stools made the kitchen island a natural gathering place where they could serve foot, eat, drink and converse with the cook.
While doing the kitchen island makeover, we also kept in mind its connection with the corresponding spaces and selected low back counter stools, so the views are not obstructed.
Industrial Hood Vent & Kitchen Island Makeover
Color sets the space’smood and makes you feel a certain way. It can’t be too overpowering from the space; neither can it be too light that it doesn’t compliment the space.
We repainted the kitchen island to match the metallic pewter color of the industrial hood vent.

How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets?
Determine the current material on your kitchen cabinets. First, confirm the materials of the current kitchen cabinets. If you don’t know which finishes or paint materials are on your current cabinets, go to your local Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore stores.
Buying suitable paint: Make sure that you buy the correct paint and supplies according to your kitchen cabinets’ material; wood, lamination, or metal. Keep in mind that laminated kitchen cabinets will require a different type of primer. Always buy acrylic or lacquer paints as they are more durable and easy to handle. Acrylic-based paints clean up much easier too.
Examining the existing paint: Now, before you begin painting, you need to look if the existing paint is even and in good condition. If so, then you can skip to the next step. And if not, then you have to apply a stripping solution and leave it to react. After a while, it will start to come off, and you can peel the paint off using a scraper. Once you have scrapped the entire layer now, you have to sand it using sandpaper to completely remove all of the existing paint.
Applying Primer: Start applying primer by spraying with a fine mist with the appropriate spray tip. You can also use a brush if you’re not too picky about the finish. Tip: Use a brush for smaller corners, and be sure that your strokes are even.
Painting the cabinets: Start with painting the frames first with a good quality tip after covering everything in general proximity with plastic sheeting. Preparation is key. If you prefer, you can also brush the frames. You can use the brush for smaller details and a roller for a larger surface and make sure that your strokes are even. We prefer Purdy paintbrushes for DIY products. Purdy is now only available at Lowe’s Home Improvement stores.
Applying a second coat: After completing the above step leave the paint to cure and then apply another layer for finishing. Leave it again to cure, and you’re all done! Again, most importantly, don’t skip asking your paint pros at Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore.
Have fun doing a paint job for your kitchen cabinets to make them look clean and fresh. Or you can always ask us to do it for you, without worrying about the even strokes and sourcing the right supplies. Click here to contact us for a kitchen remodel interior design consultations.
Industrial Hood Vent Ideas For Traditional Kitchens | Dallas Interior Designers | Kitchen Designers in Dallas TX
As I mentioned earlier, the previous kitchen dining furniture was not the best fit for their style, and it also wasn’t the best fit for this layout. So, we designed a new custom kitchendining furniture for our client.
We choose a round dining table to encourage interaction. The 70″ is optimal in terms of scale and gives peaceful home vibes. The placement of this table also provides a warm welcome to any guests coming over.
Along with the new custom kitchen dining furniture, we also worked on the custom window treatments. While the present windows brought ample light, they lacked a thoughtful integration with the interior. You can’t just have windows because you want light; it has to feel cohesive with the other spaces.
To bring an over-all cohesive look, we added window details that hid the motorized shades Hunter Douglas aka smart home window treatments, and soften the window edges, making the space more comfortable.

Check out the article to see what we had to say.

Below you’ll find the post with my comments on each designer’s take.
Top Interior Designers Reveal the Best Trends to Try in 2021
2020 changed life as we know it in so many ways. It especially affected the collective relationship we all have with our homes. As a result, we saw a renewed focus on functionality, flexibility, and comforting aesthetics within our interiors. What will 2021 bring, you ask? We checked in with some of the top interior designers to see what they anticipate will be the biggest home trends of 2021. Read on to see what they had to say.
Bolder designs and color choices
In 2021 there will be a big push towards mixing patterns, materials, textures, and colors to create a more layered artistic look than a clean, monochromatic scene that we saw a lot in 2020. Farewell white and gray with a splash of navy and hello mustard and forest green with a dusty pink splash. Wallpaper is in its prime, and we’ll be seeing people pay more attention to the 5th wall (the ceiling). – Crystal Blackshaw
With everything that the world endured last year, it is of no surprise that we will see more trends that truly mimic nature’s serenity. After all, nature has been known to be restorative. From warm, moody, natural elements and tones to furniture that is as raw and curved as mother nature could devise, 2021 trends will look to bring the outdoors in. – For Love and Design
As we work and study from home, we all need space to focus, Zoom and remain productive. Once an outdated piece of furniture, a secretary is a piece chock full of drawers with a top that folds down only to allow a person to have an individual space to work and then folds up, hiding chaos from the decor. It can be a beautiful antique for a more traditional home or more contemporary, blending into our transitional and modern homes. – Carolyn Thayer Interiors
With everyone spending so much time at home – people are looking for more privacy. They want a more divided floor plan, but also a large kitchen and family room. While people want to see others in the house, they need soundproofing elements, so perhaps a casement window wall that divides a kitchen and breakfast area will be a trend going forward. – Susie Novak Interiors
You’ve got it, Susie! Open floor plans have been challenging for a lot of families. We have a few interior design home renovations going on now where we have presented constructing new walls.
Spaces that promote health and wellness
Last year, we discovered how important it is to have spaces that serve our daily needs. 2021 design will build on that discovery. I predict we will see clients wanting spaces that promote health and wellness (less stress, more calm) at home. We will see it in products like touch-free faucets, programmed lighting, and smart toilets that warm and wash. We will also see more focus on livability.
Of course, we want our furnishings to be beautiful. But they also have to be super comfortable and made with easy to clean and lasting fabrics. Think pragmatic beauty. This is part of the calming factor – we don’t want to fuss with our stuff. – Jenni Lease Design
Embracing Grandmillennial styling
“Grandmillennial” design pays homage to classic traditional style by mixing colors and patterns, wallpapers and trims, old and new. Grandmillennial or “Granny Chic” is a youthful interpretation of classic home decor – think the Home Alone house. Mass-produced furniture in monochromatic colors we have seen in the past is not part of this trend. – Olive Juice
Olive, we agree! Mixing classic home furnishings and antiques with more contemporary art and design to create chic modern interiors is something we love doing too!
Sustainability and natural organic elements
By bringing in live plants, and choosing sustainable natural materials, while also reducing the use of materials in our spaces that emit VOC and other chemicals, we can improve our indoor air quality while also reducing our impact on the environment. The use of natural and sustainable materials such as wood, wicker, hemp, acacia, rattan, cotton, and live greenery will dominate the 2021 design trend to help create an organic and relaxed feeling in our homes. – Om In The Home
Along with two-tone kitchen cabinets and ditching the garden tub in the master bath, updating old brick fireplaces is the way to go. Painting brick can go a long way, but a stone veneer over the brick or any dated facade would allow you to hide cords and cable if you’d like to hang your TV now. Add a new mantle, and your tired old fireplace will be the star of your room. – Your Home by Wendy
Traditional, single-use areas becoming new, multi-use spaces
Formal dining rooms and guest rooms are a thing of the past! Think meditation and yoga spaces, homework stations for multiple kids, inside playgrounds, hobby rooms, or home theaters. – Personal Space
Wood floors are getting lighter, while wall and cabinet colors of creams, soft blues, and pale green tones are becoming more prevalent. Other favorites include boucle fabrics, knurled textures, and luxe gold finishes. – Evalia Design
Yes, our interior design clients are loving lighter-toned interiors. Dark, drab interiors are a thing of the past. Floor to ceiling windows and more natural light is also requested as we plan Dallas home remodeling projects.
Blending indoor and outdoor living
Flexibility is everything; it’s wonderful to have a room that can be fully opened when the weather is great and closed when less than ideal. Planning is crucial. It’s important to think about these things before beginning a project. Speaking of the outdoors, this is a great time to plan an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, or enhance the outside for entertaining once the weather changes. – Gray | Walter
Warmer colors to create a sanctuary
Since “stay at home” has become the slogan for the past year, I think families embrace warmer colors to create their sanctuary. Darker colors for accent walls or a dramatic bedroom are becoming the trend. We are getting away from whites and cool grays. – Home Decor by Donna
We agree with Donna! While we still have many requests for grays and whites in the Dallas designers market, we incorporate colorful interiors.
Bringing the vacation vibe into your home
People are looking for a sanctuary at home with warm tones, calm color palettes, and natural blonde woods. However, we see saturated colors and funky wall treatments with accent scenes of palm leaves, florals, and tropical accents; lots of greens and salmon pink. It seems that people are perhaps interested in bringing the vacation to their home until we can return to normal travel. – Miarao Design
The last number of homes I’ve photographed all have newly-finished ADUs – and I expect to see more in the coming year. ADUs afford a lot of flexibility in working from home, multi-generational living, workout spaces, and more. – STRUKTR Studios
We have several Dallas clients converting pool houses to living quarters for family members. I would say I need a She-Shed, but unfortunately, my hubby has moved to Austin for work, so I’m now taking interior design appointments in Austin, TX. I do not need a She-Shed yet, but I agree with the ADU concept. Mine and Bob’s parents passed away, so the ADU concept would have been great. Click here if you need to book an appointment with me as your Austin Interior Designer or Austin Decorator.
Using plants as wall
Using live plants or botanically correct aka faux plants as wall art will make a big 2021 debut. Both indoors and out, in luxury estates and condominiums, our Dallas interior design clients spend more time in their Dallas homes and gravitating toward nature. The vertical garden walls concept is timeless and provides texture and a visual statement when collectively combined in patterns using nature’s varied colors and green shades. Dee Frazier of D’KOR HOME by Dee Frazier Interiors
Bold black and white patterned furniture
Think bold black and white stripes on a plush fabric, modern sofa. Or a black velvet sofa with black and white striped pillows and a bold red floral pillow for a pop of color. – Rumble Interiors
We couldn’t agree more Rumble interiors! Look out for Lori and mine’s latest photo on Facebook.

How To Paint Angled Walls In a Bonus Room?
To visibly gain height in an upstairs bonus room or a room with pitched ceilings, paint the pitched or angled part of the ceiling the wall color. Extending the wall color naturally makes the room feel it’s actual height. If you were to paint the ceiling color’s angled parts white or the ceiling color, the room height would appear shorter.

7 Beautiful Veranda Ideas Photos & Covered Porch Ideas For Luxury Homes In Texas by Kevin Spearman
\The Inaugural Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas benefiting Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club features a beautifully designed veranda by Kevin Spearman. Outdoor spaces have always played an important role in our lifestyle in Texas and even more important now as we are spending more time outside.
Kevin’s goal for the covered veranda is to create an extension of chic living that was simplistic and serene. He drew inspiration from a project he designed in the hills outside Tel Aviv, Israel. Tension is revealed from the mix of styles, periods, and textures while using sustainable and organic materials. The result is fresh and sophisticated in a timelessly modern veranda on a traditional luxury home in Texas.
Just as you should on the interior design of a home, it’s important that outdoor furniture be comfortable and conversational. Choose outdoor furniture that is relaxing for entertaining for your lifestyle.
2. Add Art Outdoors.
Often times, luxury homes in Texas contain outdoor sculptures or art of some type. We loved the way Kevin Spearman added a museum pedestal topped with a bust. It’s modern and conversational.
Notice how Kevin Spearman used a vintage tree trunk for the planter. It’s much taller than expected and the organic petrified tree trunk is simply gorgeous.
While we do get quite a bit of wind in Texas, it’s not so much that we can’t add outdoor chandeliers. I love the natural basketweave flower petal chandeliers that Kevin Spearman used on this luxury home in Texas at the Inaugural Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse.
5. Balance Live Greenery & Consider Your Lifestyle For Plant Maintenance.
The biggest mistake some homeowners make is not thinking about which plants will go undercover and how they will be watered. Notice most of the minimal plant material on this veranda. Kevin did a great job of balancing the landscape with the plants under the veranda. Select plants & trees that you can easily commit to maintaining.
7. Use Slip Proof Outdoor Flooring or Outdoor Tile.
Remember, your veranda flooring will get wet. Choose outdoor materials and outdoor tiles to avoid slip & falls. All outdoor tile will never be slick. It’s also typically over-sized. Click here to read about my client’s nightmare story of having to replace their pool tile.
Much like interior rugs, outdoor rugs ground each space and provide texture. The simplest thing an outdoor rug does is it keeps furniture from feeling displaced or floating. Outdoor rugs or rugs in general, just bring an entire space together.

This gracious guest bedroom was located on the lower floor. Conceived by California interior designerDina Bandman as a mini-retreat for overnight visitors to escape their daily surroundings and be indulged with classic, elegant luxury was the key factor for the color interiors spring design of the guest bedroom which easily converts to a sitting room or lounge by day.
Sitting Area & Guest Bedroom Decor With Custom Day Bed
A timeless blue and white canopy bed is turned sideways in the room to feel more like a daybed and to allow ample space for a seating area that invites guests to relax and unwind from the day.
Its design depicts a Chinoiserie pattern with a scene of nature in full bloom on a vibrant imperial yellow ground.

The Guest Bathroom | Ivy Pattern Wallpaper
The adjoining bathroom continues to bring the outdoors in. The wallpaper’s hand-painted ivy pattern was custom designed with deGournay to climb from floor to ceiling with its deep green leaves on a neutral ground. The vanity’s trellis detail further echoes the room’s verdant garden theme.
